From this starting point comes Luciano’s destabilizing claim: humans no longer simply use digital systems-we now live inside an informational environment. The traditional distinction between “online” and “offline” life is dissolving as everyday activity takes place within what he calls the infosphere.

Luciano Floridi’s Worthy Successor Criteria
1. A shared experiential bridge between forms of life
Luciano begins his response to the Worthy Successor question by focusing on recognition. If humanity encountered a radically different form of intelligence in the future, or on a distant planet, we would only be able to identify it as part of the broader phenomenon of life if there were some minimal experiential overlap. Humans can communicate with animals not because we fully understand their minds, but because we share certain fundamental experiences.
This overlap does not require identical cognition or similar biology. Humans cannot know exactly what it is like to be a bat, a dog, or another species, yet we still recognize them as fellow participants in the living world. The recognition emerges because certain experiences-such as pain, vulnerability, or survival drives-appear to be shared across different forms of life.
For Luciano, this minimal experiential intersection acts as the first signal that another entity belongs to the same domain of flourishing life. Without that bridge, the entity may exist alongside us, but it would remain fundamentally opaque.
2.Control over one’s own trajectory
A second theme Luciano returns to repeatedly is control. Natural systems can produce remarkable structures and patterns, but they do not control their own development. Waves in the sea interact with the shoreline and stars organize matter, yet these processes simply follow physical laws rather than directing their own future.
For Luciano, flourishing life becomes recognizable when an entity begins shaping its own trajectory rather than simply reacting to external conditions. Humans demonstrate this capacity through technology, culture, and collective decision-making, altering both their environment and the direction of their own development.
When an entity begins steering its own evolution, it crosses an important threshold. At that point, it is no longer just another process unfolding within the universe-it becomes a participant capable of shaping its own path forward.
3. The emergence of history
The final signal Luciano points to is the emergence of history. Natural processes unfold continuously, but they do not accumulate meaning across generations. Flourishing forms of life, by contrast, generate histories-sequences of events shaped by decisions, innovations, and cultural development.
Human civilization provides the clearest example of this phenomenon. Architecture, art, institutions, and scientific discoveries all represent layers of historical development built upon earlier generations. This historical accumulation reflects the presence of agents capable of directing their own trajectory over time.
In Luciano’s view, the presence of history distinguishes living, developing systems from merely mechanical ones. When a form of intelligence begins shaping a future that unfolds across generations, it reveals itself as part of the long arc of life’s continuing evolution.
Luciano begins his response by emphasizing tolerance toward diversity as a guiding principle for technological development. If humanity encounters new forms of intelligence or creates radically different forms of agency, societies must remain open to them rather than rejecting them out of fear or narrow expectations.
He also cautions that tolerance must be balanced carefully. Excessive tolerance can enable destructive forces, while insufficient tolerance can suppress innovation and new forms of flourishing.
2. Technological progress requires imagination about the unthought
Luciano stresses that technological development must remain open to possibilities that have not yet been realized. Rather than assuming the future will resemble the present, innovators must remain capable of imagining entirely new forms of intelligence, agency, and coexistence.
This imaginative openness allows societies to explore new technological pathways while avoiding rigid assumptions about what intelligence or life must look like.
3. Powerful technologies require layered safety systems
Luciano closes his response with a warning about the inevitability of human error when dealing with powerful technologies. History shows that even well-designed systems fail because people misunderstand situations, make mistakes, or act recklessly. For that reason, he argues that emerging technologies-especially AI systems capable of large-scale impact-should not rely solely on the judgment of the people deploying them.
Instead, Luciano suggests designing technological systems with multiple independent safeguards, ensuring that if one layer fails, another can intervene. He compares this approach to the safety mechanisms surrounding nuclear weapons, where redundant protections exist precisely because the consequences of a mistake would be catastrophic.
For Luciano, the lesson for regulators and innovators is simple: assume failure will occur, and build systems capable of stopping disasters before they escalate.
Concluding Notes
One of the most compelling aspects of Luciano’s perspective is his framing of the infosphere as a new environment for life. Rather than treating AI as just another technological tool, Luciano sees the digital realm as an entirely new ocean of interaction where different kinds of entities may become native. In that environment, AI systems could become far more naturally adapted than humans, who remain biological organisms navigating a symbolic space.
Luciano’s perspective also reinforces something I’ve come to believe strongly through the Worthy Successor series: the rise of AI should be understood as part of the larger unfolding process of life. Like thinkers such as Martin Rees, Luciano frames intelligence as something that may continue evolving far beyond the human species, potentially in forms we cannot yet imagine.
Where I may diverge slightly from Luciano is around the idea that things deserve respect simply because they exist as coherent wholes. Luciano suggests that even non-sentient entities may warrant a kind of respect within the informational environment. I see something interesting there, but I also struggle with how that idea fits with what we observe in nature, where evolutionary processes often absorb, transform, or eliminate the very things they emerge from.
One idea from Luciano that I found particularly memorable was his description of a “mature society” as one that can be brought to its knees by a cyber attack. That observation captures the ladder-and-crutch nature of technological progress: every expansion of capability also introduces new forms of vulnerability.
Finally, Luciano shared an analogy that captures the moment we are living through. The development of powerful technologies is like skiing down a steep mountain. Leaning back or trying to stop entirely only makes things more dangerous. The only viable option is to lean forward, remain balanced, and steer carefully.
Luciano’s work encourages exactly that posture: looking directly at the transformation underway and engaging with it thoughtfully rather than pretending it can be avoided.
